Free zipper pouch patterns, from easy to impressive

A zip is the one thing that stops most beginners. These five patterns are ordered so that each one adds a single new skill, and the first one takes about twenty minutes.

🔗 The one that teaches zips

Start with the Trousse Dahlia: one zip, one lining, straight seams. Once that works, the ZeepZeepZeep takes the same technique and repeats it three times.

✏️ Small pouches and pencil cases

The Pencil Case opens flat into a pencil holder, the Mini Trousse Dodue is a patchwork zip pouch, and the Fabric Basket Pouch stands up on its own on a desk.

How to insert a zip without fear

Three habits change everything. First, press the zip flat before sewing, never iron it directly. Second, sew the zip before assembling the pouch, not after. Third, use a zipper foot and move the needle position rather than forcing the fabric. Every pouch pattern on this page explains it step by step, and most have a video.

Frequently asked questions

What size zip do I need?

It depends on the pouch: each listing states the exact zip length in its materials list. A longer zip can always be shortened, never the opposite.

Are the pouches lined?

Yes, all five are lined, which is what hides the zip seam and gives the pouch its shape. The lining is also where you can use a contrasting fabric.
