Free bag patterns you can sew in a weekend

A bag is the best first sewing project. It uses little fabric, it teaches you seams, corners, straps and sometimes a zip, and you end up with something you actually carry every day. All the patterns below are free, with illustrated instructions and a video tutorial where one exists.

👜 Start with a tote

The Sac Passe-Partout is a classic lined tote, and the Sac One Shoulder takes a single handle that sits comfortably on the shoulder. Both are beginner-friendly and use a small amount of fabric.

🎒 Go further with straps and structure

The Vadrouilleur converts from a tote into a backpack. It is the project to pick once you are comfortable with a lining, and it teaches adjustable straps and heavier fabrics.

👛 Small projects with big results

If you want something quick, the Clutch, the Triple Wallet and the Double Card Holder each take an afternoon and use scraps you already have.

Which fabric should you use for a bag?

Bag making lives or dies on fabric choice. Use canvas, coated canvas or heavy cotton for the outside so the bag keeps its shape, and a lighter poplin or cretonne for the lining. A standard sewing machine handles canvas perfectly with a jeans needle (size 90/14) and a slightly longer stitch.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special sewing machine?

No. Every bag on this page can be sewn on a basic domestic machine. The only two things worth buying are a jeans needle for heavy fabrics and a zipper foot if the pattern has a zip.

Are these bag patterns really free?

Yes. You order at €0, no card details, and the PDF is sent to you immediately. There is no subscription and nothing hidden behind a paid tier.

Do the patterns include seam allowances?

Yes, 1 cm (3/8 in) unless a pattern says otherwise. Each listing states it in the specification table, along with the sizes and the recommended fabrics.
