Free baby sewing patterns for beginners
Sewing for a baby is the gentlest way into garment making. Nothing has to fit for long, the pieces are small, and a finished bib takes twenty minutes. Every pattern on this page is free and most come with a video tutorial.
👶 Bibs first
The Bandana Bib comes in three sizes from newborn to 36 months, with a snap closure. The Baby Bib is the classic shape, finished with bias binding and no seam allowances needed. Both are made for using up small pieces of soft fabric.
🍼 For the parent, too
The Nursing Pillow has a removable zip-off cover, so it can be washed as often as needed. It is the one project on this page that takes an evening rather than an afternoon, and it is worth it.
🧤 And for the pram
The Mittens come in three sizes on separate layers, so you print only the one you need.
Which fabric is safe for a baby?
Choose natural, breathable fibres: cotton, bamboo terry, linen blends. Avoid anything scratchy at the neck, and pre-wash everything at 40 °C before cutting, both to remove shrinkage and to remove finishes. For bibs, terry on the back and cotton on the front is the combination that works. Skip buttons and small beads within a baby's reach.
Frequently asked questions
Are these patterns suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes. The bibs involve only straight seams, curves and a snap. If you have never sewn a curve, start with the bandana bib, which has the gentlest one.
Can I sell what I make?
